Roots & Regions

Where it comes from

Our story

Roots & Regions connects small producers from the Alentejo with people who want to know where their products come from. Three stories - told just as they are.

Fritz - São Marcos

The stone mill

Fritz

Fritz lives near São Marcos in the south of Portugal. He found a millstone in the riverbed and used it to build his own stone mill.

Each milling takes around four hours and uses a slow, cold process. The oil it produces is deep and nutty. In the evenings Fritz plays the cello, and he is also a winemaker.

“A home-built mill, four hours per batch.”

São Marcos, Alentejo, Portugal.

Jan & Sandra - Rio Mira

Casa Oliveira

Jan & Sandra

Jan, Sandra and their son Tiago look after 220 Galega olive trees on two hectares by the Rio Mira. They have lived on the land for four years - a family of three doing the work together.

Galega is the mild variety: gentle and rounded, for every day. On bread, in salads, for cooking.

“220 trees, a family by the river, a mild everyday oil.”

Rio Mira, Alentejo, Portugal.

Honey from the reforestation project - Alentejo

The beekeeper

Honey from the reforestation project

Our honey comes from bees that live in a reforestation project in the Alentejo - bees that are rebuilding a forest.

Nothing added, nothing heated. 320 g, pure, in a jar.

“The honey is a by-product of something good.”

Alentejo, Portugal.

And the soap?

Handmade olive oil soap: poured at Vagarosa Ranch, cured for three to four weeks, wrapped in kraft paper. Plain with coconut, with finely ground almonds or with Alentejo honey.
